What Dreams Are Truly Made Of: Regenerative Farming with Our Flock and Herd
Share
If you had asked us years ago what our dream life looked like, it would have been hard to capture in words. But today, standing out in the pasture watching our little farm ecosystem in action, we know exactly what it looks like. It’s living, breathing, clacking, and grazing right in front of us.
This is what dreams are truly made of.
At the heart of our homestead is a commitment to regenerative agriculture—a way of farming that doesn't just take from the land, but actively heals, restores, and builds it up. And our pasture is where the real magic happens, thanks to a wonderful team effort between our horses and our chickens.
The Dynamic Duo: Carolina & Dakota
Meet Carolina, our beautiful buckskin yearling, and Dakota, our steady dun yearling. Watching them move through the grass is pure peace. But beyond being beloved members of our farm family, Carolina and Dakota play a key role in our land restoration cycle.
As they graze, they trim down the pasture grasses and leave behind valuable organic matter. But to truly unlock the power of regenerative farming, you need a little help from some smaller, feathered farmhands.
The Clean-Up Crew: Loki and the Girls
Enter our flock! Led by our handsome rooster, Loki, and his trusty hens—Olive, Ethel, and Hazel—the chickens are the ultimate pasture regenerators.
Once Carolina and Cayenne have grazed through an area, Loki, Olive, Ethel, and Hazel get straight to work:
-
Natural Pest Control: The chickens scratch through the soil and manure, eating fly larvae, ticks, and beetles, naturally keeping pest populations down without any chemical treatments.
-
Spreading the Wealth: As they scratch and forage, they naturally spread and break down manure, incorporating organic matter back into the soil faster.
-
Fertilizing the Land: Chicken manure is rich in nitrogen and essential nutrients, giving the soil a rich, natural boost so lush, healthy grass can grow back stronger for Carolina and Cayenne.
A Living, Breathing Cycle
Every scratch of Hazel’s feet, every bug Olive catches, every cozy moment Ethel finds in the grass, and every proud crow from Loki is part of a larger purpose. Together with Carolina and Cayenne, they are building living, healthier soil, sequestering carbon, and creating a resilient pasture for years to come.
Building a regenerative farm isn't always easy, but moments like these—where animals and nature work in total harmony—remind us why we chose this path. It’s simple, rooted, and deeply rewarding.
This land is thriving, our animals are content, and our hearts are full. Truly, this is the dream.
